Figeac's most famous son is the famed linguist and egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion, who was instrumental in deciphering the ancient Rosetta Stone.

The Rosetta Stone now rests in the British Museum in London. From July 1999, to January 2000, the British Musuem is running a special exhibition called, "Cracking Codes: The Rosetta Stone and Decipherment"

Here is an extract from the writing on the Rosetta Stone:

There is a museum in Figeac dedicated to Champollion. It is located in the Place des Ecritures.
